Explanation of SEER vs Annual Operating Cost

The seasonal energy efficiency ratio, or SEER for short, is a number that indicates how efficient an air conditioning system is. The higher the SEER value, the more efficient the air conditioner. It is also very important to keep in mind that as the SEER rises, so does the purchase price a system. It is against the law to import any system that is less than 13 SEER.

The SEER rating by it self can help you to compare systems, however, most of us are only concerned with the bottom line. In order to make an informed decision you need to take into consideration the purchase price, any rebates that you may receive, and the annual operating cost of the system.

The following chart shows the annual savings on operating cost compared to installing a 13 SEER air conditioner. You will need to know the capacity required for your home in order to compare.
